Commonweft Consulting
Organizations move forward when they move together.
Weftward helps individuals find their next move.Commonweft helps organizations move forward together.
The common thread
What the name means.
On a loom, the warp threads are stretched tight and hold steady. The weft is woven over and under through them, one pass at a time. Neither one makes cloth alone. The strength comes from how they cross.
A community works the same way. The warp is the steady structure: institutions, employers, local leaders, and resources. The weft is what moves through and ties it all together. Commonweft is the common thread: the shared understanding and working relationships that connect people who would otherwise pull separately.
That's how we work with organizations. We don't replace your people or impose a plan. We help the threads you already have cross in the right places:
- Aligning stakeholders so the people involved are pulling in the same direction.
- Surfacing the real problem, not just the loudest symptom.
- Building something that holds after we leave.
A strong weave is a strong community.
What we do
Get your people on the same page, then get it done.
When a project, a change or a big decision needs people on board, things stall. Folks pull in different directions, or the loudest problem crowds out the real one. We help you sort it out together and see it through.
01
Find the real issue.
A working session with your leaders and a clear look at what’s really going on: root causes, who’s involved, and what’s realistic for you.
02
Get people on board.
We help the people involved pull in the same direction and agree on a plan they’ll stand behind.
03
Follow through.
We help carry decisions through to progress. If it helps, we set up simple tools to keep things moving: a private workspace built around how your team works, and an assistant that turns what your team shares into a short morning brief. Nothing reaches you without the team member’s okay, and nothing goes out without yours. Your files stay in your own storage.
Every engagement is scoped to your situation. We’ll talk it through first.
Who we work with
Owners and leaders with a project that needs people on board.
We work with small and mid-sized businesses in Burke, Caldwell and Catawba Counties.
- Small businesses and family companies
- Developers and builders
- Local manufacturers
Good fit if you have a project, change or decision that depends on several people (your team, partners, investors, or neighbors and local officials) and it’s stuck or about to be.
Probably not a fit if you need start-up basics like a business plan, licenses or funding. The free Small Business Center and SBTDC do that well, and we’ll gladly point you there.
Our track record
Real work. Real progress.
Different challenges. One approach: find the real problem, bring the right people together, and build a way forward.
01
Workforce housing, approved.
We helped bring a roughly 32-acre workforce-housing community in east Burke County through stakeholder engagement to a unanimous county approval. The first homes are now being delivered.
02
Connecting housing to economic development.
As part of a regional workforce-housing effort, we bring employers, developers, chambers and local government into the same conversation, tying housing affordability, infrastructure and workforce stability to the region’s economic future.
03
Moving development opportunities forward.
Across Western North Carolina, we do the early work that gets projects moving: property research, landowner relationships, coordination with towns and counties, and early planning to turn underused property into housing.
04
From an idea to a free tool anyone can use.
We built Weftward and its free guide, Shuttle, which helps people find their next step and points them to free programs and local professionals.
05
Leadership and stewardship.
Our background includes twenty years of corporate training, from major accounts to technical and professional development, along with leadership and financial stewardship roles across business, civic and nonprofit organizations. That includes helping a local congregation build a learning path from daycare through the teen years as it roughly doubled in size while keeping its welcoming character.
The common thread
None of these efforts started with a perfect roadmap. They started with a problem, people who had a stake in solving it, and a willingness to question assumptions. That’s how we work: understand the problem, challenge the assumptions, build the process, move forward. The goal isn’t to become indispensable to every solution. It’s to help create solutions that keep working.
How it works
Three simple steps.
1
Reach out.
Tell us briefly what you’re working on.
2
Talk it through.
A short first conversation to see what’s really going on and whether we’re a fit.
3
Decide.
If it fits, we agree on scope and cost in writing before any paid work starts. If not, we’ll point you to free help.
